Liverpool dominated throughout the Premier League contest but looked set for a nervous finish when Sven Botman pulled one back for Toon on 81 minutes to make it 3-2.

However, moments later Mo Salah was able to secure the victory from the spot with his second of the game after the Merseyside outfit were awarded a penalty.

That came when Jota was played clean through and the star rounded goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

But just as the 27-year-old Portuguese forward looked set to slot home into an empty net, he went flying to the ground following minimal contact from Dubravka.

Afterwards, Arsenal legend Ian Wright took to social media to question Jota, writing: “Would rather go down for a penalty than put the ball in an empty net! Seen it all.”

And that led to a response from his fellow Match of the Day pundit and Newcastle’s all-time top scorer Shearer.

He labelled Jota as “f***ing embarrassing” in his reply.

Meanwhile, even Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher admitted that he “couldn’t fathom” why a forward would go down when presented with an empty net to score.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, he said: “He doesn’t need to go down. Just carry on.

“There’s the slightest touch but it doesn’t knock him off. It’s there just to be put in with your left foot.

“He’s gone down far too easily. Is there contact? I don’t think there’s much contact really.

“Maybe the slightest contact but I don’t believe a player would go down when there’s an empty net to put the ball in it.

“I can’t fathom that.”
