Andrea Atzeni wins Stewards’ Cup on 18-1 shot Aberama Gold before final three races abandoned at Glorious Goodwood

EVERYTHING Andrea Atzeni touches turns to Gold.

The top jock banged in yet another big race at Goodwood, this time in the Stewards’ Cup on Aberama Gold.

Since announcing late last month that he was ditching the UK for Hong Kong, he has been in irresistible form.

He won York’s feature last Saturday and has banked a hat-trick of wins at the Glorious meeting this week.

None were more valuable than yesterday’s historic six-furlong sprint, which was run on atrocious ground after a biblical storm earlier in the afternoon.

But 18-1 shot Aberama Gold, who only recently joined David O’Meara after Keith Dalgleish quit the training ranks, glided across the mud like he was on a hovercraft.

He travelled into contention better than anything and, though Apollo One ate into his advantage late on, he did it a shade cosily by half a length.

The remainder of the 28-strong field were strung out like three-mile chasers, but it all came very easily to a mud-splattered Atzeni.

He grinned: “It was tough going out there but he did it very easily and it’s a great race to win.

“I felt the other horse coming to me inside the final furlong but I always felt like I had the race in control.

“It’s been a great week but I have no regrets about Hong Kong – I’m very excited to start that new chapter soon.”

That proved to be the final piece of action at Glorious Goodwood, as the final three races on the card where abandoned due to patches of false ground on the round track.

Clerk of the course Ed Arkell said: “The jockeys were concerned with one or two areas of ground around the bottom bends.

“The straight course was fine, but the remainder of the card is on the round course so we have unfortunately had to abandon.”

The abandonment meant Tom Marquand finished as top jockey and he bagged his fourth winner of the week with another bold front-running ride in the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes.

He was made all aboard 25-1 shot Sumo Sam and caught his rivals flat-footed with a canny injection of speed half a mile from home, just like he did on Quickthorn in the Goodwood Cup.

Marquand said: “I came close to finishing as top jockey the other year but Ryan Moore did me on the post.

“It’s a great meeting and I won’t lie, it will be very nice to see my name up on the honours board.”
