Riyad Mahrez’s double had left City 2-0 up on the night, 4-1 on aggregate, in the first semi-final.
And midway through the second period Di Maria matched the stupidity shown by his PSG squad-mate Idrissa Gueye in the first leg.
On that occasion Gueye picked up a straight red for a terrible tackle on Ilkay Gundogan as City held onto a 2-1 lead in Paris.
This time PSG’s moment of shame came when Fernandinho walked towards Di Maria, seemingly to confront him, as the ex-Real Madrid wideman stooped to retrieve the ball.
Di Maria suddenly turned round and jabbed his studs down on the top of Fernandinho’s foot.
The Brazilian slumped to the floor – while Di Maria tried to quickly take a throw.
But referee Felix Brych had no option but to dismiss the 33-year-old.
