Arnold Schwarzenegger addresses fresh calls to run for office in his native Austria as he can’t make bid for White House

THE FORMER Californian governor and bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger has responded to calls for him to return to politics.

As an Austrian native, Arnold isn’t eligible to run for his dream position as President of the US, but in an interview with Howard Stern he said that he still has “the energy” for the job.

Arnold said: “I do my things – I do my books, I try to make life better for people.

“I like to kind of improve the environment situation, to make people come together — Democrats and Republicans — and to fight pollution,

“To protect democracy, to make sure that people have the right to vote everywhere.”

He claims: “So many people come up to me and go, ‘Oh, I wish you could be our president’ or something like that. So then of course you think about it.”

Arnold also openly criticised former President Donald Trump throughout his term.

The star frequently called him the “worst President ever” and, comparing himself, said that he “would’ve made a great one”.

Given Arnold’s political dreams of becoming President, The Rest is Politics host Rory Stewart asked why the icon doesn’t consider a career in Austrian politics.

Rory asked: “Can I ask you Governor? You can’t be president of the United States because the Constitution doesn’t allow you… but why not become Chancellor of Austria?” 

“Austria would love to have you back. You’re a big star in Austria, it’s your country… Why not go back and be a great Austrian politician?

Which Arnold immediately dismissed. Although he maintains that he would make a great President, his ambition is not to attain a position of authority.

He said: “I think they have a good Chancellor… I don’t want to go back to Austria and be a politician.”

While the bodybuilding legend loves his motherland, and makes sure to visit his home country every year, he added: “To do politics there… no I have no desire to do that.”

Instead, he said he felt compelled to give back to America.

From his career in bodybuilding, to acting and then to politics, Arnold thanks America for how he was able to build his legacy.

He said: “I just feel like I want to live in America. I want to live in California.”

Despite having an upbringing fraught with economic instability and a poor relationship with his father, Arnold Schwarzenegger has had many great successes throughout his life.

He began bodybuilding at the age of 15, and won the Mr Universe title at the age of 20.

He went on to win the Mr Olympia title seven times, earn his American citizenship, become a star in Hollywood action films, and also became the Governor of California.

The Terminator star held the position of governor for eight years, from 2003 to 2011, earning 55.9 per cent of the vote in his re-election.

He was also named as one of Time magazine‘s 100 most influential people in the world between 2004 and 2007.
