Arsenal legend and France U21 boss Thierry Henry slams ‘horrible’ 3-0 defeat to South Korea and hints at squad overhaul

THIERRY HENRY has slammed his France U21 squad’s 3-0 defeat to South Korea as “horrible”.

Henry began his reign with four successive victories but the newly appointed coach has now suffered back-to-back defeats.

Henry became the new manager of France’s under-21s team during the summer.

The Arsenal legend replaced former manager Sylvain Ripoll, who was sacked following the Euros this summer.

France was eliminated from the tournament in the quarter-finals by Ukraine.

The French icon has been able to redeem his side through four victories including a record-breaking 9-0 win against Cyprus U21.

However, their winning run was brought to a halt when they lost 2-0 to Austria U21 and on Monday night faced a 3-0 defeat to South Korea.

Henry said after the game: “The result is horrible. I told the guys that we were taught a lesson in fighting spirit against Austria.

“And here against South Korea, we have received a lesson in realism.”

Les Bleuets’ downturn has coincided with Warren Zaïre-Emery’s departure from the squad.

In his debut, he scored in Didier Deschamps‘ side’s historic 14-0 win against Gibraltar.

Meanwhile, the biggest challenge for Henry is coaching his side at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

With no goals scored during the international break and five goals conceded Henry will need to revamp his current squad if they are to stand a chance at the Olympics next year.

And the ex-Monaco boss has responded that he will be picking more senior players in the coming fixtures.

Henry told L’Equipe: “There will be the 2001s in March’s international break. We’ll certainly have a different XI.

“Just like we’ll have a different XI for the Olympic Games. We have to prepare and we’ll see who comes back.”
