Arsenal vs Monaco preview

Arsenal will be hopeful of returning to winning ways when French outfit Monaco arrive at the Emirates for their Champions League encounter on Wednesday.

The Gunners were enjoying a run of four successive victories in all competitions before drawing with London rivals Fulham over the weekend.

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the contest with an xG of 1.93, 67% possession and 12 efforts on goal to Fulham’s two – but ultimately couldn’t find a winner.

They return to European duties this week knowing victory is paramount given they are seventh in the UCL league table and clinging on to automatic qualification for the round of 16 by goal difference.

Defensively there are come concerns for the hosts with Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko rated as doubtful, while Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu remain sidelined with knee injuries.

But there are reasons to be cheerful.

Only Barcelona and Bayern Munich (both 7) have won more home games in the Champions League since the start of last season than Arsenal (6), while their six clean sheets is the joint-most in that time along with Inter Milan.

They are also unbeaten in 13 home matches dating back to April (W11 D2) and haven’t conceded a Champions League goal in their two games against PSG and Shakhtar Donetsk.

As for visitors Monaco, they are also clinging to automatic qualification having accumulated the same number of points as Arsenal – despite scoring 12 goals in five games.

In fact, only Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have netted more than Adi Hutter’s side in the Champions League this season.

They’ve also won five of their last seven matches against English sides in the Champions League, recording victories against four different sides in this run (Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham x2 and Manchester City).

However, this will be their first such game since beating the Cityzens 3-1 in March 2017.
