Aston Villa vs Juventus preview

Much like Manchester City, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa could really do with a moral-boosting victory on Wednesday.

The Villans kick-started their Champions League adventure in emphatic style with three wins – including a famous 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich at Villa Park.

But it’s been a disappointing story ever since.

Emery’s side are currently enduring a six-match winless run, which included four straight losses in all competitions to Crystal Palace, Tottenham, Club Brugge and Liverpool.

They could have extended that run over the weekend but twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against struggling Crystal Palace.

Many are of the opinion that the extra work load is “catching up” with the Villans, who face another stiff test against Italian heavyweights Juventus before travelling to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

But on a more positive note, Villa have won seven of their last eight home matches in major European competitions.

Manager Emery has also beaten Juventus twice before in the UEFA Champions League, winning with Sevilla in 2015 and Villarreal in 2022. No manager has ever beaten Juve with three different teams in the competition.

As for the visitors, they are in mixed form having gone unbeaten in their last six games in all competitions – although that run includes four draws.

Thiago Motta’s side are 11th in the Champions League standings having won two of their opening four, but their record on the road isn’t too inspiring.

Juventus have only won three of their last 15 away matches against English sides in European competition, and they’ve also won just one of their last seven away Champions League matches.

A draw could be the answer to this difficult conundrum. As mentioned, Aston Villa aren’t in the best of form and have actually drawn three of their last five home matches.

Though in better form, Juve have won just one of their last seven away Champions League matches and have three draws in their last four away from home.

If Juventus are to score, it’s likely to come via striker Dusan Vlahovic.

And that’s a distinct possibility given Aston Villa have zero clean sheets in their last six games in all competitions. Vlahovic has been involved in five goals in his six away Champions League appearances for Juventus (4 goals, 1 assist). He’s also netted nine times in 16 appearances this season.
