One of the dead is reported to be a little girl, 8.

And some of the injured are understood to be fighting for their lives.

Photos and videos show the horrific aftermath as ambulances were driven onto the course to help the victims.

People can be seen desperately trying to administer first aid as the dead and wounded lay scattered on the racetrack.

More than 100,000 spectators had gathered to watch the high-octane race in Diyatalawa.

One of the cars lost control after hitting one of the earth embankments on the dirt track.

The vehicle then ploughed into the cheering crowds who stood just a few feet from the speeding vehicles.

Footage taken moments before the crash shows one of the racecars flipped on its roof in the middle of the circuit.

The person behind the camera is then knocked to the ground as a second car appears to crash into screaming crowd.

Other footage then shows spectators bravely rushing onto the circuit as the rally car sits on its side.

Police are investigating the fatal crash.

The race is organised by the Sri Lankan military – which has a base opposite the Fox Hill track.

Some 150 cars and 120 motorbikes were registered to take part in the day’s races.

Drivers from racing clubs from across Sri Lanka and other parts of southern Asia were competing over the weekend.

The rest of the races at the track have now been suspended.
