BBC Boat Race commentator breaks down in tears and forced to apologise after being overcome with emotion at result

BBC pundit Sebastian Benzecry couldn’t contain his emotion after Cambridge powered to victory in the iconic Boat Race.

The three-time champion, 26, was part of an elite panel for the Beeb’s coverage of the annual Thames sprint.

Benzecry previously served as the President of Cambridge University Boat Club.

And he broke down live on camera after watching his ex-teammates dominate the race.

Wiping away tears, Benzecry said: “Sorry, that was just amazing to see.

“This race, sorry. This race is so, so meaningful.

“To see [cox] Ollie Boyne win here today is just the most amazing thing.

“It’s been a hard season for these guys, it’s been a hard season for Cambridge.

“But that performance was just the most incredible row I’ve seen in a Boat Race.”

Host Clare Balding later added: “If anyone at home isn’t crying now, you’re made of steel.”

Benzecry is currently studying for a PhD in Film and Screen Studies at Jesus College.

He was replaced as President by Luca Ferraro, who also cut an emotional figure after the race.

Ferraro said: “It’s an indescribable feeling crossing the line ahead after so many months of hard work.

“I asked a lot of the guys and they really delivered.”

The race had been delayed from its scheduled start time after debris was spotted floating in the river.

Cambridge started strongly and began to stretch away from their Oxford rivals as they passed Fulham’s Craven Cottage.

The estimated margin of victory was 17 seconds.

It extends Cambridge’s overall head-to-head lead over Oxford to 88-81.

Earlier, Cambridge women had sealed an eighth victory in a row over their great rivals.
