BOOKIES are in for a sleepless night after they raised the alarm over a ‘significant gamble’ forming on a 125-1 shot.
Gary Moore’s Yorksea has been slashed into just 28-1 for Saturday’s Betfair Hurdle at 3.15pm.
The temperamental six-year-old gelding has refused to race the last twice, including when evens favourite for a handicap at Fontwell last November.
But someone somewhere reckons he is capable of much, much more in the big Newbury race.
Moore has already landed big gambles this season, including 34-length Welsh Grand National winner Nassalam.
Lee Phelps, spokesperson for William Hill, said: “Despite refusing to race the last twice, punters are putting plenty of faith behind Gary Moore’s Yorksea.
“A few quid started to land at 125-1, which saw some raised eyebrows from traders, but the money has continued to flood in right down to his current price of 28-1.
“This is a significant gamble and, if successful, could make it one of our most expensive single races of the season so far.”
Moore himself has no idea if the horse will decide to run or not this time in the 2m Class 1 race worth almost £90,000 to the winner.
He said in his Sun Racing column: “At an enormous price, don’t discount my old rogue Yorksea 3.15 in the Betfair Hurdle either.
“He’s probably one you’ll want to back on the exchanges, given that he’s refused to jump off the last twice.
“He was fourth in the race last year, though, off 3lb higher and maybe he was just saving himself for the big race — who knows!”
Shrewd Moore also gave a positive mention for his well-backed Spirit A’Aunou.
He said: “He has done nothing but improve and I’m sweet on his chances of a Betfair Hurdle win.
“The issue, like always, is the weight he has to carry.
“He’ll be lugging around 11st 13lb today and it’ll probably require a Champion Hurdle performance to win it off that.”
