Boxer Caleb Plant had $500 to his name after career gamble… now he is millionaire and married to presenter wife

CALEB PLANT once ran his bank account to its final $500 – but it was a gamble that paid off big time.

Plant is a former super-middleweight world champion who faced Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez in a huge pay-per-view payday.

He now returns over the weekend against Trevor McCumby in his bid to climb to the top of the division once more.

But there was once a period when Plant – married to boxing presenter Jordan – was a contender putting all his time and money into the sport.

It meant draining his account on training camp costs – at the time a risky gamble on his career.

Plant said on his YouTube channel: “It had always been a goal of mine to have a nutritionist and it was just a matter of getting the right funds.

“Going into my world title fight in 2019 I had like $500 left in my bank account and that was the camp I implemented a massage therapist for the first time.

“As soon as I won my first world title, I implemented a nutritionist and I can definitely tell the difference in how much longer, how much harder I was able to train throughout the week.

“As opposed to starting to feel it a little bit on Thursday, Wednesday/Thursday, I’m finishing the week almost as strong as I was starting the week.

“It’s definitely made a huge difference and it’s important for fighters to re-invest back into the company.

“I feel like a lot of fighters, they get a little bit of money and they spend it all on this, that and the third and they don’t re-invest back into their company.

“If you actually wanna take it all the way up and reach those heights, you have to put that money back into your company just like any other entrepreneur.”

Plant won the IBF title in an upset over Jose Uzcategui in Los Angeles.

He made three defences before meeting Canelo in a 2021 undisputed title bout in Las Vegas, which he lost in round 11.

But according to information shared by Dan Rafael, Plant made a guaranteed purse of $10million (£7.6m).

It marked a stunning turnaround for the American, who used to rely on the help of his wife back in the day.

He said: “Before I had a nutritionist it was just me and Jordan trying to put our best food forward, you know eat what we would think is healthy and try to eat the right thing at the right time.

“But it’s nothing like having a professional who knows the exact amount of macronutrients, the right amount of electrolytes, the right amount of carbs and fats, protein and what to eat before a workout what to eat after a workout.

“There’s a whole science to it and as much as you try to put your best foot forward, it’s nothing in comparison to having a professional.”

Jordan met Plant while working for FOX on Premier Boxing Champions events.

They have been together eight years and got married in 2019.

Jordan said: “Being a boxing wife I think you need to have a lot thicker skin because obviously it’s a combat sport.

“When you’re seeing him get hit and you’re seeing him fight – luckily he doesn’t get hit too much – but it happens obviously.

“I just tell myself, he’s been doing this since he was nine-years-old, he signed up for this, he loves it, it’s his passion and knowing those things that he’s living his dream, that’s what let’s me know he’s alright.”

Boxing is a family affair for Plant with his dad Richie assistant trainer in camp to head coach Stephen “Breadman” Edwards.

Baby daughter Charly, two, often joins her mum and grandad in the gym to cheer on her doting dad.

And Plant said: “For me, I just love boxing.

“I love training, I love the grind it’s something I love doing and I have my family and friends in there too so it’s a way for us to connect too and something we can bond over.”
