The 22-year-old was on the bill at York Hall but did not have an opponent confirmed until 24 hours before the fight.
Most expected Ali to win comfortably – but he was caught off guard with a huge right hand in round one.
He failed to regain his composure and the referee stopped the fight soon after as Sams began to dominate.
After the bout, Ali sat in the corner of the ring and was attended to by medics.
He was given oxygen as he sat looking dazed.
The Londoner is now okay and he was able to walk back to the changing rooms.
On his shock win and late call-up, Sams revealed he was at work in Yorkshire yesterday and had next to no preparation.
He said: “It was raining all day, I finished work, got home at 2.30pm and got the call. I said yeah I’ll take it.
“I was definitely coming for the win. I saw his hands going low so I’d see if he could take [the power].
“I’m buzzing, I feel mint, so proud.”
