He protested the decision by confronting the fourth official, who seemed to be ignoring Ten Hag’s pleas.

Fernandes then walked over to his manager and defused the situation by pulling the Dutchman away.

Ten Hag initially seemed shocked before he realised it was one of his own players who was trying to calm him down.

Ten Hag thinks very highly of Fernandes and recently made him United captain – taking the armband away from Harry Maguire.

His role as skipper also means Fernandes is part of a six-man leadership group within the squad.

The midfielder opened the scoring against the Gunners with United winning the match 2-0.

Fans were impressed with Fernandes and joked he showed Ten Hag who is boss.

One supporter wrote: “Fernandes will be the new manager in three weeks.”

A third said: “And that’s why he’s captain.”

And another commented: “He seems like an incredible captain.”
