Brutal moment Frank Lampard ‘ends Roy Keane’s managerial career’ as Man Utd legend hints at shock comeback

ROY KEANE has doubted his plans to return to management after listening to Frank Lampard’s assessment of the role.

The Manchester United legend had once again hinted at a shock return to the dugout.

Keane has been out of management since leaving Ipswich in January 2011.

Lampard was a guest on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, discussing his time as a coach.

The former Chelsea boss explained: “Every manager’s got relative success.

“You know, Pep (Guardiola) wins most years, brilliant manager, got fantastic players. The rest of us are looking for relative success, whatever that is.”

Gary Neville then asked Keane about his desire to return, with the Irishman quipping: “I’m wavering on that listening to Frank here.”

Lampard apologised, adding: “I’m sorry about this, I’m going to be more happy.”

Meanwhile, Neville joked: “You just ended Roy Keane’s managerial career.”

Keane continued: “Can I go back to it? Not that it’s going to be the Real Madrid job but it’s got to be the right challenge.

“It’s got to be the right club, it’s got to be the right contract, can you bring your staff or not?

“I discuss this all the time. I have had opportunities but sometimes you get offered a contract, I go back and look at it if I do get offered stuff, a bit of self worth. Is the deal right for you?

“I’d like to go back in, but I’m not desperate where I’d sign any contract for anybody.”

Keane has had spells in coaching since leaving Portman Road 12 years ago, working under Martin O’Neill with Ireland and Nottingham Forest.

Those jobs came either side of a stint as Paul Lambert’s No2 at Aston Villa in 2014.

As for Lampard, he has taken charge of Derby, Chelsea and Everton since retiring in 2017.

He followed up reaching the play-off final with the Rams in his first season in management by securing a top four finish with Chelsea despite a transfer embargo.

More recently, he beat the drop with Everton in 2022 before returning to the Blues as caretaker boss for the final 11 matches of last season.
