And it’s Pep’s disciple Vincent Kompany that will be trying to pull off a minor miracle in this season’s curtain raiser.

The Clarets’ boss will be full of confidence in his team after they walked the Championship last season racking up 101 points and losing just three games.

Newly promoted sides are no stranger to a shock first game either with Brentford toppling Arsenal in the season opener two seasons ago.

But the task of taking down the Treble winners will be about as tough of an ask as you can get for a first game.

Burnley will have to deal with the inevitable Erling Haaland who stunned the Premier League last term scoring an unbelievable 36 GOALS in 35 appearances.

But Kompany will hope their new signings will be able to make a difference including their new £19million keeper James Trafford who they’ve snatched off opponents City.

As for the Cityzens, they’re out to prove they can continue to dominate the Premier League and will be looking to get the perfect start in their chase for what would be a record breaking fourth title in a row.

However they’ll have to bounce back from the disappointment of losing out on the Community Shield, after falling short on penalties to Arsenal last weekend.

They’ll have confidence they can beat Burnley though after they breezed past the Lancashire club with a 6-1 win in the FA Cup quarter-finals last season.

But this is a new look Burnley side under a new regime – gone are the days of long-ball hardmen.

Turf Moor will be a place where Burnley try and dominate games and control possession if last season’s football is anything to go by.

What is their form like?

City are obviously coming off the back of a stunning campaign last term where they completed the Treble, but have had their spirits dampened by losing out on the Community Shield to Arsenal.

As for Burnley, they have had a successful pre-season which culminated in a shock 2-0 friendly victory over European heavyweights Benfica.

What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?

Manchester City will be hoping Kevin De Bruyne will be available after he got his first minutes under his belt last weekend since the Champions League final where he picked up a hamstring injury.

There could also be a debut for new £78million signing Josko Gvardiol who didn’t make the matchday squad for the Community Shield whilst Nathan Ake missed the matchup due to a knock.

Burnley will also be hoping to hand competitive debuts to some of their new signings including Trafford, Dara O’Shea, Jordan Beyer and Zeki Amdouni.

Who will be the star men?

It’s hard to look past Haaland, who broke the Premier League record for the most goals in a single campaign last term, as being a standout performer.

The Norwegian also bagged a hattrick against Burnley in the two sides’ cup clash last season.

Josh Brownhill was exceptional for Burnley last season and will be wanting to continue his form into the top flight.

The 27-year-old managed seven goals and eight assists from central midfield last season as was nominated for Championship Player of the Year.

SunSport prediction

Burnley are a different beast under Kompany and can certainly pull off some surprises this season, but Man City are just too good to not back and should wind up comfortable winners on the night.
