That result lifted them up to third in the Premier League, and two above the reigning champions.

Not many would have predicted Villa’s stunning campaign after their nightmare opening day defeat at Newcastle.

They kicked off the season with a 5-1 thrashing at St. James’ Park – but the legendary former Manchester United saw something he liked that day.

Fergie, who was knighted in the 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, appeared pitchside to join NBC Sports’ pundits at Old Trafford before United beat Wolves 1-0.

And when asked who had impressed him most over the opening weekend of action, the Scot shocked everybody with his response.

He said: “To be honest with you, I watched Aston Villa and Newcastle, and I can’t believe the scoreline.

“Honestly, Aston Villa played fantastic football, and just lost bad goals.

“It’s a surprising game, football. You can play teams off the pitch and not score – that’s what Aston Villa did.”
