But in only three days since the second-tier club launched their plea, more than £21,000 has been raised – including from rival teams.

The surface at Nottingham’s Lady Bay ground was completely drenched and is still partly covered by water.

And as the venue is on a flood plain, the Archers can’t pay for all the repairs through insurance.

So they set up a JustGiving page, asking for aid at a “very difficult time”.

The club said: “The severe flooding of our site at Lady Bay has left damage to our pitches, clubhouse and training facilities.

“We urgently need financial help to enable us to reinstate our facilities to provide Championship Rugby matches, community training facilities and private events.

“We’re calling on the local rugby community to support us through these unprecedented times for the club. Your club needs you.”

Nottingham first need to pump all the water off the pitch and the surrounding area.

But their second task could be even tougher.

To protect public health, the Archers must sanitize the area in case sewage caused contamination.

Championship rivals Doncaster Knights typified how rugby has come together in support of Nottingham by donating £10000.

The Knights, who are the most promoted club in the history of the sport, also added a powerful message.

They told the Archers: “We feel for you and hope that you obtain the resources to get you back on track. Anything else we can do to help, please let us know.”

Other positve words from fans on the JustGiving page included: “Fantastic to see the incredible support from far and wide!”

But another backer added a more personal note for as he pledged £20 to the club: “Crack on. We need a table on the 30th.”
