Chelsea favourite singled out for ‘really weak defending’ before Man Utd’s winner

CHELSEA’S Levi Colwill was slammed for his role in Scott McTominay’s winning goal with the Manchester United star simply “wanting it more”.

The Premier League clash was end-to-end throughout and sprang in to life early on when Bruno Fernandes had a penalty saved by Chelsea ‘keeper Robert Sanchez.

United bounced back to take the lead through Scottish international midfielder McTominay in the 19th-minute.

An excellent finish from Cole Palmer drew the Blues level on the stroke of half time to leave the game finely poised going into the second period.

But it was United who took the points when McTominay grabbed his second in the 69th minute after tussling with Colwill at the back post.

The 20-year-old England international, who was stand-in captain for Chelsea, fell to the floor after minimal contact from his rival but the goal was awarded after a VAR check.

Colwill will now be best advised to stay away from rewatching any of the analysis from the game from Amazon Prime Video as their pundits tore into in him after the incident.

Newcastle and England legend Alan Shearer led it, claiming that the ex-Brighton loanee had given up far too easily.

He said: “It’s really weak defending there from Colwill.

“You can see the both of them were at it, they’ve both got their arms on each other there.

“It went to VAR but it was never a foul, it was never going to be enough to be turned over.

“The defender should be dealing with it there. But great credit to McTominay, he wanted it more than the defender and he gets it – and it wins the game for them.”

Fellow pundit Patrice Evra, a former Manchester United full-back, agreed and said: “The left-back, he went down really softly there. He was too soft.”

While Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also added: “It’s a goal. You need to defend your box, you need to be strong there.

“It doesn’t matter how big or how tall you are, or how small you are, you cannot lose a ball at the second post.”

The result moved United into sixth, three points behind reigning champions Man City, while Chelsea are left languishing in tenth, 11 points off the top four.
