Chelsea vs Newcastle preview

Chelsea return to Premier League action following their resounding 4-1 victory over Panathinaikos in the Conference League on Thursday.

And they’ll enter the encounter with confidence given they’ve lost just one of their 29 Premier League home games against Newcastle (W21 D7).

The Blues sit sixth in the division with 14 points from their opening eight games – three behind Aston Villa and Arsenal in the Champions League qualification places.

After a slow start, things have clicked for Enzo Maresca’s side whose goal tally and xG (expected goals) is only bettered by two sides in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s last three top-flight defeats have come against last season’s top-three, but aside from that they are unbeaten in 19 games against all other teams scoring 54 goals across those matches.

As for Newcastle, it’s been a little flat of late.

Eddie Howe’s side have only won once in their last five, and that was a 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over League Two AFC Wimbledon.

The Magpies are ninth in the table with 12 points but failing to beat Everton and a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton last time out will be cause for concern.

Goals will also be a concern. Newcastle have netted eight times in the league this season, but their are underperforming their 12.48xG by -4.48. Only Southampton and Manchester United have underperformed their xG by more.

Chelsea vs Newcastle preview betting tips and predictions

Mr Ice

It would be foolish to back against Chelsea star Cole Palmer in this encounter. Palmer has 18 goals and five assists in his last 14 Premier League appearances at Stamford Bridge.

He’s created 24 chances for his colleagues in 682 minutes of league action, which is bettered only by Bukayo Saka and Dwight McNeil. He should be capable of adding to his assist tally for the season.

Saves

Nick Pope could be a busy man on Sunday. Newcastle have actually shipped the fifth-highest number of attempts on goal this season – and they’re up against a side who’ve fired off 108 shots in eight league games.

Only three goalkeepers have made more than Pope’s 35 saves this season – and four of those were in last week’s defeat to Brighton.

  • Nick Pope over 4 saves at Evens with William Hill – CLAIM HERE
