Cheltenham’s statement read: “In our fifth race of the day, Corbett’s Cross was immediately attended to by our veterinary professionals, but sadly sustained a fatal injury.

“Our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.”

Corbetts Cross was ridden by jockey Jack Kennedy during the Gold Cup.

Several fans have paid tribute to Corbetts Cross.

One wrote: “This is so heartbreaking.”

While a second commented: “Sickening. Was running so well as well.”

Corbetts Cross was owned by JP McManus.

His loss will come as a bitter blow for McManus, on what should have been a perfect Gold Cup for the Irishman.

McManus, 74, also owns Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin.

Ridden by Mark Walsh, Inothewayurthinkin produced an upset to beat red-hot favourite Galopin Des Champs.

Corbetts Cross had enjoyed success at last year’s Cheltenham Festival.

He triumphed in the 2024 National Hunt Chase.
