Unai Emery and his Aston Villa side make the familiar trip to Brugge for Tuesday’s Champions League knockout tie.

It’s been 118 days since the Villans last visited the Jan Breydel Stadium in which a bizarre penalty incident cost the visitors dearly.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez nudged the ball out of the six-yard area and defender Tyrone Mings, believing the goal-kick had not been taken, picked up the ball.

Hans Vanaken dispatched the spot-kick to give his side an important 1-0 victory that night and in doing so ended Villa’s run of three successive Champions League wins.

But Emery and Co. Will be hopeful of a different result this week as they seek to reach the last eight of Europe’s top club competition for the first time since 1983.

Villa made relatively light work of the inaugural group league phase, finishing eighth while hosts Brugge went through to the playoff stages in 24th.

In the meantime, the Midlands club have progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and have themselves a favourable draw against the only Championship club remaining in the competition, Preston.

Consistency has been the main issue for Emery’s side.

Aston Villa trumped against Tottenham and Chelsea in recent weeks and secured a fine draw with leaders Liverpool.

But they’ve also failed to beat a 10-man Ipswich Town at home, and were thumped 4-1 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

They might just be encouraged to hear that Club Brugge have won just one of their last 16 games against English opposition (D3 L12), conceding 42 goals during that time.

The Belgian side’s only victory in that time did come against Aston Villa, however, 1-0 in this season’s league phase.

And Club Brugge manager Nicky Hayen will believe anything is possible after his side knocked out Europa League holders Atalanta in the play-offs.

It looks likely to be a low-scoring and nervy affair in Brugge on Tuesday. Both sides will want to keep the tie alive heading into next week’s meeting at Villa Park.

Only twice in last 11 matches involving Club Brugge have a side won by more than a one-goal margin, while visitors Aston Villa have managed just two victories on the road since their loss in Bruges back in November 2024.

I suspect Unai Emery will be satisfied with a draw, while Nicky Hayen proved against Atalanta that his side are perhaps at their best with limited possession on the counter.
