The FA are keen on hiring Howe following his impressive work with Bournemouth and Newcastle, qualifying for the Champions League with the latter.

Howe is one of the favourites to take over but the FA would need permission from Newcastle to speak to him about the job.

While an expensive compensation package would need to be agreed between the two parties.

Howe is thought to be one of three leading candidates to succeed Southgate, should he resign.

The England boss will consider his future over the next few days ahead of crunch talks with FA chief Mark Bullingham.

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter is the bookies’ favourite for the job.

While Mauricio Pochettino, who left the Blues at the end of last season, joins Potter and Howe in the group of favourites.

Fellow former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has also thrown his hat into the ring.
