The two sides were level at 0-0 in the 52nd minute when ref Adam Herczeg was sandwiched by two players and sustained a head injury.
He was treated on the pitch as play was suspended for a hefty 20 minutes.
It became clear Herczeg could not continue in his role, with the other officials hastily rearranging their roles.
But luckily for both sides, a fan from home team Wigan was drafted in as an emergency fourth official on the touchline.
Supporters watching the game could not help themselves from commenting on social media.
One laughed: “Best part of the night.”

One noted: “Only in Wigan.”
Another added: “I’ll jump in the car, be there about midnight.”
Incredibly, the game then saw a winning goal right at the end of the 20 minutes of added time.
Charlie Hughes fired home for Wigan in the 110th minute to seal a stunning win.
The result saw the hosts move to 11th in League One, while Wycombe remain in 17th place.
It’s not the first time a fan has been drafted in as an official in the past week.
A Wolves fan took over as the fourth referee in his side’s FA Cup win against Brentford.
And he had to stifle his celebrations as Matheus Cunha struck a late winner at Molineux.
