ENGLAND star Kieran Trippier made a shock appearance for Newcastle’s U21s last night.

The right-back, 33, was an unused sub in Toon’s 1-0 Premier League win against Southampton on Saturday.

And Trippier made himself available for selection as Newcastle’s kids drew 1-1 with Sunderland at Whitley Park yesterday evening.

The defender played the first 45 minutes in front of a 1,000-strong crowd – just a month after featuring for England at Euro 2024.

But Trippier wasn’t the only Toon first-teamer to turn out against the Black Cats.

Left-back Matt Targett also got 45 minutes under his belt after making a return from a hamstring injury.

The former Southampton and Fulham man picked up the problem in November.

And last night was his first competitive outing since then.

Both Trippier and Targett will now be hoping to break back into Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

But they will first have to oust impressive former Chelsea youngsters Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

The two full-backs were forced to work hard as 10-man Newcastle scraped past Southampton at the weekend.

Howe’s men had to fight for all three points following Fabian Schar’s first-half red card.

And they secured the narrow 1-0 win thanks to Joelinton’s timely strike.

Newcastle’s next league game sees them travel to Bournemouth on Sunday.

They then visit Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup before facing Tottenham and Wolves.
