Scott McTominay also spurned a late opportunity to win the game as the match ended 2-2.

But there were plenty of positives for Ten Hag to take from the clash, including forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford getting on the scoresheet.

After the game the Dutchman enjoyed a candlelight dinner with Vos at an Italian restaurant called La Famiglia in Hale Village, Cheshire.

It has been a busy period for the United boss after meeting new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford earlier this month.

Ratcliffe was in attendance at Old Trafford for the Spurs clash and sat alongside Sir Alex Ferguson.

He had his head in his hands at one point but Ten Hag’s position as manager is thought to be safe for the foreseeable future.

That is because Ratcliffe is planning a detailed structural review which will likely take up to two months.

Ratcliffe and Brailsford want to do a huge audit of the football side of the club in an attempt to grasp the “performance challenge” on their hands.

Brailsford is claimed to favour a swoop for former Liverpool transfer guru Julian Ward.

Former Tottenham transfer chief Paul Mitchell is also a contender as well as ex-Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards.
