Aubameyang, 34, has struggled to recapture his best form since joining the Ligue 1 outfit.

The Gabon striker has only scored one goal in ten league appearances since completing his free transfer from Chelsea.

He has enjoyed better success in European competition, having netted four goals in Champions League qualifiers and the Europa League.

However, that has not appeased the Marseille crowd, who let him know of their disapproval.

Aubameyang’s 77th-minute exit from the clash against Lille was met with a chorus of boos from the home support.

Manager Gattuso has defended the striker but did admit that the fans are “always right”.

He told Prime Sport Video:  “I will always defend my players, not only Aubameyang.

“The supporters booed Aubameyang’s exit, but also the team and me because they weren’t happy and we have to accept that.

“Of course, we need to be better.

“It is normal to be worried when we are booed. We didn’t give the maximum and so it is difficult to accept.

“We can’t give up because we have been booed.

“The supporters are always right.

“They paid for tickets and if they don’t like what we do, we have to accept that.”

Aubameyang left Chelsea in the summer after a disastrous spell at Stamford Bridge.

His dad, Pierre-Francois, opened up on the tough year that he endured.

Speaking to L’Equipe, he said: “His jaw was broken by robbers at his home in Barcelona while trying to protect his wife and children.

“At Chelsea, he played with a mask at the start. It could only be a nightmare year.

“Now it’s over. He has a smile. He knows that I’m seeing the light again because I can walk and run since my last operation.

“And he’s signing for [Marseille]. It is a big relief after the nightmare year that he experienced.”
