FORMER Tottenham transfer target Gelson Martins has reportedly been frozen out of the Monaco squad.

Martins, 28, was put up for sale in September with manager Adi Hutter insisting that he must leave the club as soon as possible.

Hutter said: “It was never my decision (to sign him). It is an agreement between the club, Thiago (Scuro, CEO) and Gelson.

“I like the player, but we have to trim the squad. He knows that he has to leave the club.”

Martins has not made a single appearance for Monaco this season.

He is also no longer training with the first team and did not feature in the official club photo.

The winger’s agent and the club mutually agreed that he train away from the first team following Hutter’s statement.

Foot Mercato claims a move to the Saudi Pro League or a return to Portugal in January is now likely for him.

Martins joined Sporting Lisbon as a teenager and made his first team debut in 2015.

He went on to make 140 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals and providing 30 assists in three years, before completing a free transfer to Atletico Madrid.

However, the winger struggled to break into Diego Simeone‘s squad and was limited to just 12 appearances – eight of which came off the bench.

Martins then signed for Monaco in January 2019 and became a first team regular until he received a six-month ban for pushing a referee.

Tottenham considered a move for him on transfer deadline day last summer after missing out on Dan James, but talks fell through.

The winger recently tumbled down the pecking order at the Louis II Stadium following the arrival of Hutter.
