The victory saw Humphries become the new world No 1, after he picked up three major titles this year.

He 28-year-old has already lifted the World Grand Prix, the Players Championship Finals and the Grand Slam of Darts.

But he says his biggest aim is to go one more – and claim the World Championship at Ally Pally.

He must overcome 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler in a hotly anticipated final.

But some viewers are now learning that Humphries has a hidden reference to football club in his birth name.

The 28-year-old is a huge Leeds United fan and his dad named him Luke as it stands for [L]eeds [U]nited [K]ings of [E]urope.

Speaking in October after winning the World Grand Prix title, he said: “I think everyone knows I am named after the club, that’s no secret.

“I am not from Leeds, but the club really was in me from birth.

“It was great in the early years of my life, then we had a patch of hard times, but I really feel we’re now on the up as a club again despite what happened last year.”

Nicknamed ‘Cool Hand Luke’ – a riff on the 1967 prison-drama film of the same name – Humphries is a breakthrough figure who entered the competition as favourite.

Meanwhile, Littler’s fairy-tale run has undoubtedly been the story of the tournament.

The Warrington wonderkid made more history on Tuesday night as he beat Rob Cross 6-2 to become the youngest ever player to reach the World Darts Championship final.

The two Luke’s have faced off before – when Littler narrowly missed out on victory at just 12 years old.

An incredible picture has emerged on Littler’s social media of the two posing together after the match four years ago.
