Renard, who bizarrely managed Cambridge in 2004, has guided Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations triumphs.

More recently he has taken charge of teams at men’s World Cups, gaining fans with his crisp white shirts and suave haircuts.

Renard managed Morocco at the 2018 World Cup, and was in charge of Saudi Arabia in Qatar last winter.

Earlier this year the France women’s national team job became available, following the sacking of unpopular former boss Corinne Diacre following a player mutiny.

Frenchman Renard subsequently quit his job with Saudi Arabia in order to manage his home country at this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

France’s tournament got off to an underwhelming start last week when they drew 0-0 with Jamaica.

But during this morning’s high-profile clash with Brazil, which was broadcast live on BBC One, many casual viewers that may have missed Renard’s appointment were left stunned.

One tweeted: “Herve Renard ???”

While a second wrote: “Herve renard is France manager lmfaooo.”

A third pointed out: “Hervé Renard manages the French Women’s Team? That man has been everywhere.”

And a fourth commented: “Hervé Renard is really a hustler.. just saw he’s coaching the French women’s team.”

A further social media user added: “Renard made the switch to Women’s football? This guy is never out of a job.”

France took the lead against Brazil on 17 minutes via Eugenie Le Sommer’s header.

Ahead of the tournament, Les Bleues received praise for an “insanely clever” advert.

The promotion began with a series of France men’s team highlights, before halfway through revealing that they were all in fact from the women’s team’s games, with VFX used to create the illusion that the moments had been produced by Kylian Mbappe and Co.
