DARA O’SHEA was booked for timewasting after just 27 seconds as fans labelled it the “stupidest yellow ever”.

The Burnley centre-back started in the middle of defence alongside Maxime Esteve as Bournemouth made the trip to Turf Moor.

O’Shea went into the game knowing he had a tough battle on his hands up against in-form Cherries striker Dominic Solanke.

But the Irishman was on a tightrope from the very first minute after his petulant act of timewasting.

The ball had gone out for an early throw-in for Bournemouth down their right wing.

But as Solanke held the ball over his head to take the throw quickly, O’Shea hilariously jumped up and headed it out of his hands.

The Burnley defender tried to apologise and play it off as an accident.

But referee David Coote saw straight through his pretend innocence and brandished the immediate booking.

Fans tuning in to the early Sky Sports Super Sunday game ahead of the Manchester derby were left utterly baffled by O’Shea’s behaviour.

One said: “That might be the stupidest yellow I’ve ever seen.”

Another wrote: “Kompany: ‘Remember lads, keep your discipline. No silly bookings.’ Dara O’Shea:”

A third added: “So silly.”

And Clinton Morrison commentating on BBC 5 Live asked: “Why would you get yourself booked so early?

“It’s a stupid decision, unbelievable.”

Then when Burnley conceded on 13 minutes to Justin Kluivert, a final user fumed: “Pathetic. Great start by O’Shea – ridiculous booking and then part of that embarrassment. End the season now.”

With just 27 seconds on the clock, it surpassed Ashley Young by 11 seconds as the quickest yellow card of this Premier League season.

It is also the fifth fastest since Opta stats began recording in 2006-07.

Sadio Mane has the quickest, getting booked just 14 seconds into Liverpool’s clash away at Chelsea on January 2, 2022 after catching Cesar Azpilicueta with a stray elbow.
