After a frantic back-and-forth match that saw Man City look set to win 4-3, the Blues won a late spot-kick after Ruben Dias brought down Armando Broja.

Palmer, 20, having only moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer stood up to take the penalty and fired past Ederson to level the scores.

Fans loved the moment on social media as they sang the Englishman’s praises.

One posted: “His name is Cole Palmer. Cold as Ice.”

A second commented: “ICE COLD COLE PALMER.”

A third said: “I’m not a big fan of Cole Palmer but that was a very cold penalty kick.”

A fourth wrote: “Cole Palmer is too cold. Better than Foden.”

Another added: “Cole Palmer is a better player than Phil Foden.”

After the game, Palmer was asked about scoring against his old side.

He told Sky Sports: “I have the utmost respect for the club.

“It was nice to see some friends, we were unlucky not to get the win but it was another great game.

“I have many city fans at home, but yeah it is the game.

“I had a long time waiting but felt confident for the penalty.”

On his composure, he added: “I am not going to say I practice them because I don’t.

“I trust in my natural ability.”

Palmer had been booked earlier in the match for scuffing up the penalty spot.

The penalty was given after Marc Cucurella was adjudged to have fouled Erling Haaland, but Jamie Carragher did not think it was a foul.

Palmer cost Chelsea £42.5million in the summer transfer window and he has become one of their top players this season.

The club supporters have hailed him as the player they thought Mason Mount would become.
