Fans stunned at ‘ridiculous’ little-known rule that could see Calvert-Lewin hit with heavy ban despite red card reprieve

FOOTBALL fans are raging after discovering a rule that could see Dominic Calvert-Lewin receive a heavy ban despite having his red card rescinded.

The Everton striker, 26, was controversially dismissed during his side’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace in the FA Cup last week.

But the punishment, which referee Chris Kavanagh brandished for a challenge on Nathaniel Clyne after consulting the pitchside monitor, was retrospectively rescinded.

However, fans are only now learning of an FA regulation that states the red card will remain on Calvert-Lewin‘s record.

This means another sending off for the England forward this season would see him serve an extra match ban in addition to the suspension due for the offence.

And fans on social media were thoroughly unimpressed with the rule.

One said: “Is there any logic to this? What on earth is that about ? 😂😂

Another added: “This is nuts. Why would an overturned red card stay on his record?”

A third replied: “Utterly ridiculous.”

While a fourth responded: “FA proving themselves to be utter clowns yet again!!!”

After Calvert-Lewin’s record card was rescinded, the FA released a statement saying: “Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be available for Everton’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.

“The striker was sent off for serious foul play in the Emirates FA Cup game against Crystal Palace on Thursday, January 4 2024.”

The decision means he can play in Everton’s upcoming Premier League games against Aston Villa and Fulham, as well as their FA Cup replay with Crystal Palace.

Sean Dyche‘s men, who suffered a 10-point deduction in November, sit just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
