The goalkeeper signed for the Bluebirds on a season-long loan deal in August.

But he was understudy to No1 Jak Alnwick in the Welsh capital and was restricted to just six Championship appearances.

So Cardiff have decided to terminate Runarsson’s loan and he has returned to Arsenal, according to The Telegraph.

He is now set to join Danish giants Copenhagen.

Runarsson, 28, signed for Arsenal in 2020 but has made just six appearances for the club.

He has also had spells on loan at OH Leuven and Turkish side Alanyaspor, where he spent the duration of the 2022-23 campaign.

Arsenal could have a busy end to the window with several youngsters lined up for an exit.

Lino Sousa has already departed for Aston Villa while Bradley Ibrahim has signed for Hertha Berlin.

Marquinhos could also leave the club on loan, having already spent time at Nantes this season.

Swansea are understood to have agreed a deal to sign youngster Charles Sagoe Jr on loan until the end of the season.

Meanwhile the Gunners have sent scouts to the Africa Cup of Nations to watch Ivory Coast and Midtjylland centre-back Ousmane Diomande.
