FORMER Premier League stalwart Matt Lowton who was playing in the top-flight just last year has surprisingly signed for a non-league club.

And the 34-year-old defender will now be managed by another ex-Prem star at the eighth tier minnows.

This ex-Sheffield United and Aston Villa ace was released by Burnley during the summer after eight years at Turf Moor.

After his arrival from Villa in 2015, he became a key man under Sean Dyche and helped them to the Championship title in his first season there.

The right-back then went on to continue to play regularly in the top-flight for the club and scored three times but last term he began to fall out of favour after Vincent Kompany took charge.

Lowton moved to Huddersfield Town on loan in January as Kompany led Burnley to the title and back to the Premier League.

Despite helping the Terriers beat relegation, he was not offered a permanent deal and instead had an unsuccessful trial at Birmingham in pre-season.

That left him jobless going into this term, but we revealed how he was offered a lifeline in League Two at Stockport County.

However, a move there failed to materialise, and now veteran Lowton, is looking to reignite his career at Witton Albion.

The minnows are managed by none other than Jon Macken, an ex-Republic of Ireland international striker that played for the likes of Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Derby during his heyday.

Witton Albion announced his signing on social media last night with a statement that read: “We are delighted to welcome former Burnley and Aston Villa defender Matt Lowton to the Albion! 34 year old Matt has played over 230 Premier League games.

“His last PL game was 21/22 for Burnley. Welcome to Witton Albion Matt.”

Witton Albion are currently 13th in the Northern Premier League Division One West and are six points off of the play-offs.

Now they will be hoping Lowton’s arrival will help bolster their promotion push with the experienced star in line to make his debut against Newcastle Town on Saturday.
