The former chief was responsible for increasing United’s commercial revenue significantly thanks to lucrative sponsorship deals, but on the pitch the team struggled.

Woodward was also in charge of transfers including the then world-record move for Paul Pogba in 2016.

But after success in the League Cup and Europa League the following year, Woodward oversaw the club’s longest trophy drout since the mid 1980s and was constantly criticised by fans.

He departed the club two years ago but has now found a way back into the game, joining the Board of Trustees for Bloomsbury Football Foundation.

The charity works with young people from diverse backgrounds and aims to improve their mental and physical health through football, as well as teaching them valuable life skills.

Bloomsbury Football Foundation is based in London and Woodward revealed how excited he is to join the team.

He said: “I am thrilled to be joining Bloomsbury Football Foundation as a Trustee.

“This is an exciting opportunity to join a charity that is already having a significant impact on the lives of young Londoners using the power of football.”

Woodward, 52, visited the foundation last month and learned first hand what the charity provides in one of its training sessions.

He added: “Visiting a Bloomsbury Football session reaffirmed my belief that football has the power to change lives.

“It is clear the support the charity is already receiving is making a real impact on the pitch. The session represented the diversity of London – the coaches were supportive, players were engaged, and they seemed to be enjoying every minute.”
