Former Tottenham star Pascal Chimbonda issues apology after team suffer 10-1 defeat days after he came out of retirement

FORMER Tottenham star Pascal Chimbonda has apologised after his side were defeated 10-1 in the Northwest Counties Premier League.

Chimbonda took over ninth-tier club Skelmersdale United in October and cited  Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane as his managerial inspirations.

The defender made headlines recently after he received a five-match ban for improper conduct while managing the Lancashire team.

The former Premier League defender was punished after being sent off during Skelmersdale’s clash with Barnoldswick Town in October.

The former Spurs and Wigan defender then went some way to circumventing his stadium ban by registering himself as a player in the squad.

That meant that he could be present for some of the team’s games and serve a shorter ban – with the judgement being reduced to three games instead.

His registration as a player also means he has come out of footballing retirement at the age of 44.

A lover of the game, Chimbonda only retired from football in 2019 at the age of 39 – his last club being Ashton Town in the Greater Manchester area.

It looks as though Chimbonda’s rollercoaster ride as Skelmersdale coach is showing no signs of slowing down after the side were thumped by Bury FC 10-1.

It’s left Skelmersdale in real danger of successive relegations and the manager has now taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to formerly apologise to players.

Chimbonda wrote: “As @Skemutdofficial manager I want to apologise to all our fans who made the trip down to @buryfcofficial today to see us, unfortunately it wasn’t the best performance from us, we can only promise to do better Tuesday night.

“Thank you again for all your loyal support #skembonda.”

Chimbonda also made headlines during his brief stint as Skelmsersdale coach when he unleashed a half-time team-talk which contained 72 swear words as he demanded more from his players.

The Skembonda train will roll on when they take on Charnock Richard at 7:45pm on Tuesday.
