Frankie Dettori opens up on embarrassing moment with The Queen which saw racing legend escorted out of Royal meeting

FRANKIE DETTORI has revealed he once got kicked out of a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II because of his badly behaved dog.

The legendary jockey sat down for an exclusive interview with Sun columnist Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

Dettori discussed several topics including his battle with bulimia, suffering a plane crash and a funny but embarrassing moment he experienced with The Queen.

The Italian met Her Majesty on more than one occasion as he used to ride for trainer Ian Balding, who worked with The Queen.

But one meeting did not go according to plan because of a naughty dog Dettori owned.

Dettori told Piers Morgan Uncensored: “Every time that I met her I was a nervous wreck… but she always had the ability to make you feel good.

“So I’ll tell you a funny story – I won a big race 15 years ago. It was a Sunday, so after racing I had a big party. It was a lovely spring day and I left all the doors open, I had dogs and two hundred people turned up. Amazing party.

“And I woke up the next day and the house was destroyed full of bottles and I realised I lost one of my dogs, but she had a tag. There was a message on the answering machine and the message said, ‘Hi, we found your dog, please call us back on this number.’

“And the lady who found the dog was Caroline Warren, the Queen’s racing manager’s wife. So I rang Caroline and said, ‘Hi Caroline, sorry but I heard that you have my dog. Can I come and collect it?’ And she said, ‘Listen if you come this evening, the Queen’s coming to Newmarket to see the horses in the morning, so you can say hi to the Queen and pick up the dog.’ I mean, great idea.

“So my daughter got all dressed up, we went to get the dog and she was having a gin and tonic next to the fire and I had a gin and tonic with her. She spent 20 minutes talking to my daughter about ponies and about school and then they let the dog out.

“The dog ran towards me and peed on the Persian carpet in front of the Queen and John Warren. The Queen started laughing and John got really red-faced, got really upset and at that moment I got escorted out and he said, ‘We’ve got to have dinner now you better go, bye’ but the Queen was just creased laughing. She was so funny to be around.”

Dettori quit racing in England last year with his farewell taking place at the 2023 Breeders Cup.

He was nominated for BBC Sport’s Personality of the Year award but he did not finish in the top three.
