THE BBC suffered an awkward moment before Keely Hodgkinson won gold in the 800m.

The 22-year-old stormed home as she went bettered the silver she achieved in Tokyo three years ago.

Hodgkinson came into the race as the favourite, with many of her friends and family watching on from her running club just outside Manchester.

The Beeb had cameras inside the Leigh Harriers clubhouse to capture their celebrations – but things did not quite go to plan.

Gabby Logan tried to introduce them just before the race got going – yet Hodgkinson’s fans were completely unaware they were live on TV.

The presenter said: “They’re supporting her, they’re at Leigh Harriers, where she nurtured her talent and they have been with her all the way.

“Hopefully they can see themselves.”

Expecting a hello and some visible support, the BBC got nothing and Logan hilariously said: “They’re watching another channel.

“Give us a wave Leigh Harriers. Maybe they are watching another channel.

“Can somebody call them and let them know that Keely is about to go on BBC One?”

Viewers were left in stitches, with one saying: “The awkward moment when you cut to Keely Hodgkinson’s family and friends hoping for a big wave and they’re all watching Eurosport.”

Logan later confirmed on social media that they were in fact watching on the BBC but there was a “very long delay”.

The Beeb later showed the celebrations as Hodgkinson crossed the finish line to become Team GB’s third winner of the 800m after Ann Packer in 1964 and Kelly Holmes in 2004.
