Gary Neville reveals surprise clash had ‘best atmosphere I’ve ever seen in my life’ – and it wasn’t at Old Trafford

GARY NEVILLE has revealed Ibrox had the best atmosphere of any ground he played at.

The former Manchester United star discussed some of the biggest moments of his European football career on the Stick to Football podcast.

And, when reflecting on the matches he played in Scotland, Neville pointed to a clash with Rangers as one that sticks in the memory.

His brother Phil snatched an early goal which ended up being the winner, with Neville describing the atmosphere as the best he ever experienced as a player.

He said: “The best atmosphere I’ve ever seen in my life was Ibrox as the game was about to kick off, I thought, ‘What the f**k is this?’

“Celtic was loud, and Galatasaray. Phil [Neville] scored early on.

“Honestly, for the first couple of minutes before the game and when the game started, I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.

“Noise. Ibrox, honestly, it was unbelievable. Staggering.”

Neville’s former team-mate Roy Keane disagreed on the show, claiming Celtic Park had the best atmosphere.

But the pair did agree that a former Italian team they came up against in the mid-2000s were “not clean”.

Neville said: “I think there were a few teams we played against that weren’t clean, we thought it at the time.

“When you look back at what came out after, in cycling and other sports. We thought at the time something [wasn’t right]. Physically, we were fit, we weren’t drinkers.

“I came off the pitch against an Italian team and thought, that’s not right.

“I know a couple of other lads in the mid-2000s thought the same thing.”

Keane then added in agreement: “Against certain teams we’d be walking off absolutely shattered and I’d be looking at players I’d played against, a couple of Italian teams, and they looked like they’d not even played a match.”
