Goodwood Stewards’ Cup 2023 runner-by-runner guide

KING’S LYNN

LYNN the hunt. Group 2 winner over 5f but likes this trip. Ran well in the Wokingham and again at Ascot last time. Some cut suits, on the shortlist.

RUMSTAR

RUM do. Not disgraced in Group and won nursery at this meeting last year. Now 19lb higher than his last handicap run so needs a bit more.

GORAK

RAK off. Best form over 7f and is 21lb higher than his last handicap win. Bit to prove over this trip.

TANMAWWY

TAN fan. Likes this trip on any ground and travelled when winning at Windsor latest. Has a 6lb penalty but can’t be ignored.

ORAZIO

OR pure gold. Looked a star when winning an Ascot handicap over this trip on soft in May before finding firm ground too much in the Wokingham when a solid sixth. Will be suited by conditions and Charles Hills has a good record in this race. The one to beat.

MUMS TIPPLE

STRONG Tipple. Good fourth in the Wokingham and has won from 1lb higher. Likes this trip and he can give Frankie a good spin.

BADRI

NOT Bad. Fair 4lb higher than his win at Epsom in June and close on soft at Ascot last time. This is tougher but his rider’s 3lb claim helps.

APOLLO ONE

ONE to watch. Second in the Wokingham and a 3lb rise is fair. Likes a big field on soft and one of many with place claims.

SUMMERGHAND

BIG Hand. Won this three years ago from 8lb higher and hampered when ninth 12 months ago. Veteran but went well at York and track form is a plus.

BIELSA

BIEL deal. In good form with a York win before decent Wokingham effort. Likes trip and on a fair weight with Ryan Moore on board.

TACTICAL

CAL no pal. Had a wind op since a modest run at Haydock last time in April. Not the easiest race for a comeback.

JUAN LES PINS

JUAN the money. Has progressed through the ranks and ran his best race yet from the front in the Wokingham to finish third. Another 2lb makes it tougher but he’ll be right there.

MAKANAH

MAK attack. Most wins over 5f but finished strongly over the minimum at Newcastle last time. Can match last year’s seventh.

ALBASHEER

AL a pal. Good run from a bad draw at The Curragh last time. Trip suits and likes a big field so one to consider.

ALEEZDANCER

EEZ a player. Good win over this trip on heavy in April and not had his conditions since. More rain makes him a major player.

VINTAGE CLARETS

SOUR Claret. Pick of form over 5f and not at his best here on Tuesday. Lots to find.

MR WAGYU

YU beauty. Won big race in the mud at this meeting two years ago. Down the weights after some poor form and could bounce back.

HYPERFOCUS

OUT of Focus. Decent form over this trip on soft but was poor at York last time so needs his best.

ABERAMA GOLD

GOLD star. Back to best winning in a big field over this trip at York last time. Goes on any ground and can run well.

SPANISH STAR

SPAN a plan. Won a lesser race here in May and good run in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot before modest last time. Bit to find.

LUCKY MAN

YOU’LL be Lucky. Solid form at lower levels but not been firing this season and must raise his game.

STERLING KNIGHT

BRIGHT Knight. Consistent over this trip and two good runs at Windsor heading here. Likes cut and only 3lb above last win. Chance.

SIGNIFICANTLY

SIG lit up. Has done well since joining Julie Camacho with a Haydock win and good effort at Ascot over 5f. Trip suits and can go well.

WATCHYA

YA what? All wins at lower levels and looked a hard ride here last time in May. Hard to fancy.

GOOD EARTH

NOT Good. Solid form over 5f but hasn’t operated at this level before so must raise game.

CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD

CHAIR we go. Won here way back in 2018 and has placed form in hot handicaps like this. Trip suits with some cut and could hit frame.

APHELIOS

AP no nap. Fair low-grade form but needs the first-time blinkers to bring improvement at this level.

CAME FROM THE DARK

DARK horse. Two years since last win but down the weights and ran well at The Curragh last time. Can outrun odds.

Templegate’s Stewards’ Cup 2023 tip

GET on the Raz in the Stewards’ Cup.

ORAZIO comes from sprint king Charles Hills who has won this twice with hot favourites and this four-year-old loves this trip with some cut in the ground.

More rain would bring mudlark Aleezdancer right into this, while Frankie should get a nice tune out of Mums Tipple.

Wokingham second Apollo One, Juan Les Pins and Aberama Gold make up the shortlist with Chairmanoftheboard.
