GRAND National trainer Lucinda Russell suffered heartbreak after her beloved horse Giovinco sustained a fatal injury at Aintree.
The seven-year-old gelding fell at the final fence in the first race on Ladies’ Day.
There was sad news for Grand National trainer Lucinda Russell with the loss of her horse Giovinco at Aintree[/caption]Russell was celebrating at Aintree last year after her stable star Corach Rambler won the big £1million race.
But the tributes from devastated racing fans flooded social media following confirmation of Giovinco’s passing.
One said: “Gutted. Condolences to the connections. Such a great character who had a huge future in front of him.”
While another wrote: “That’s desperate news, so sorry to hear, thoughts are with everyone involved.”
The screens were put up round Giovinco following his fall and there was a delay to the next race.
He had been sent off 8-1 for the Mildmay Novices’ Chase when he looked to be running out of gas jumping the last.
His jockey Stephen Mulqueen appeared to be up and OK following the fall.
But sadly the horse could not be saved.
Giovinco, who was owned by Thunder Holdings Ltd & The Young Ones, had won five of his nine career races.
He had won more than £70,000 in prize money and most recently won at Newcastle in February.
