But earlier this month, Tonali and Aston Villa Star Nicolo Zaniolo had to leave Italy’s Euro 2024 training camp after being told that they were involved in an investigation to do with betting offences.

“He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support,” Newcastle said in a statement.

“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagiolo was also part of the investigation and he was given a seven-month ban by the Italian Football Federation.

And now Tonali has been banned himself for 10 months.

When will Sandro Tonali’s ban kick in?

Tonali co-operated with Italian authorities and agreed that as part of his 10-month suspension, eight of those would be served in a rehabilitation program.

Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina said: “The FIGC prosecutor and Tonali have reached an agreement which I have already approved.

“The agreement consists of a 10-month ban plus eight months of rehab activities and at least 16 public appearances.”

Tonali will therefore miss the rest of the Premier League season, Newcastle’s Champions League campaign, Euro 2024 and the start of next season’s domestic campaign.

Tonali, played his last game against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

Now the Italian midfielder’s suspension is confirmed, his spell on the sidelines begins right away.

That means his ban kicks in before Newcastle’s visit to Wolves in the Premier League this weekend.
