How Tottenham’s transfer move for Lucas Bergvall was ‘almost hijacked by two rivals on deadline day’

TOTTENHAM faced late competition from two Premier League clubs before signing Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall, according to reports.

Spurs beat Barcelona to the Djurgarden midfielder, 18, on Deadline Day as they agreed an £8.5million deal plus add-ons.

But things could have been very different had Aston Villa or Wolves successfully hijacked the deal.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the two clubs failed in their attempts to make a late play for Bergvall – who has already been capped by the Sweden national team.

They were willing to pay between £10m-£11m, compared with the £8.5m Spurs proposed.

But the player had already set his sights on joining Ange Postecoglou‘s men, despite being “flattered” by interest from Villa and Wolves.

Bergvall will spend the rest of this season at Djurgarden, before he officially links up with Tottenham on July 1.

This meant the Lilywhites did not need to complete the transfer before the January window closed.

Yet despite that, they have still tied him down ahead of the summer window.

The deal could rise to £15.8m if conditional add-ons are met.

Bergvall has contributed three goals and one assist in 29 appearances for Djurgarden.

He was one of three deals Spurs completed in the January window.

They brought Radu Dragusin in from Genoa for £21.5m.

RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner also arrived on loan with an option to buy – which is believed to be between £13m-£17m.
