GARY NEVILLE was swept up with the emotion of the Toon Army as Newcastle took a two-goal lead over Liverpool.

Eddie Howe’s side are looking to win a first domestic trophy in 70 years in the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle went ahead just before the break as Dan Burn turned in the opener to stun the holders.

And Isak doubled the lead in front of the delirious Toon fans just minutes into the second half.

The Swede smashed in on the rebound shortly after having a goal cruelly ruled out for offside.

Neville, on commentary for Sky Sports, could barely believe what he was watching as the Premier League leaders crumbled.

Spotting fans in tears in the stands, he said: “The Newcastle fans are crying.

“I’m almost crying for them.”

Earlier this season, Neville divided listeners of his podcast The Overlap after telling Howe to leave Newcastle.

The Manchester United legend warned the Toon chief he might “lose” out – if he doesn’t depart soon.

Speaking last September, Neville said: “If I was Eddie Howe, I would go and look after myself.

“You’ve had a great Premier League career, you’ve done a brilliant job.

“You’ve been fantastic at Newcastle. You’ve almost closed that chapter of their development.”

Newcastle have lost five Wembley finals in a row, including the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Man Utd.

Joe Harvey was the last Toon boss to lift a major domestic trophy in 1955.

Prior to Sunday’s clash, Howe said: “This is a chance to make history for us as a team.

“That’s very rare in football. You get very few opportunities to do that.

“It’s a chance to be remembered positively.”
