I’m concerned about Luke Littler after Romeo Beckham call-out – I fear he’s just jumping on bandwagon, says darts legend

DARTS legend Dennis Priestley is worried that Romeo Beckham is just “jumping on the bandwagon” with his call-out to play Luke Littler in a match of darts.

Romeo, son of football legend David, jokingly called out Littler for a game on his Instagram last week.

The 21-year-old, who is currently on the books at Brentford B, posted a photo of him practising his arrows with the caption: “@lukethenukelittler fancy a challenge ? 🤣

And fans think Littler accepted the call-out by simply replying in the comments section with an eyes emoji.

And despite the lighthearted exchange, two-time world darts champion Priestley has voiced his concern over “celebrities” taking advantage of Littler’s meteoric rise.

Speaking to OLBG, he said: “It’d be incredible to get David Beckham involved in darts – I’m not so sure about Romeo.

“Is he just trying to jump on the bandwagon of Luke Littler’s media attention?

“The PDC will always be looking at ways to incorporate a fun aspect to things instead of the seriousness of all the other tournaments.

“It’s always nice to have a bit of lighthearted fun and if they’re up for it and can make a night of it, maybe for charity, that sounds good to me.

“We can’t forget, Luke Littler is still so young and we have to be a little bit concerned for the lad. He’s going to be forced to turn his head if all these top stars are wanting to be seen in his presence.

“As long as they can play and they’re proper darts enthusiasts then it’s all well and good.

“But if it’s going to extract anything good from our game then you can only go so far with celebrities jumping on the Littler bandwagon.”

Littler has attracted attention from a number of celebrities since his rise to fame at the world championships in January.

The 17-year-old received messages of support from a number of footballers ahead of his final and even spoke to Romeo’s dad David himself.

Romeo was present at Ally Pally to watch The Nuke take on Luke Humphries with his then girlfriend Mia Regan.

While Manchester United invited Littler to their training ground to meet the players and even have a quick game of darts against England star Harry Maguire.

His whirlwind success away from the oche hasn’t stopped his success at it.

Littler is top of the Premier League darts table after winning the last two Premier League nights in a row and has been exceptional across the board.

Wins at the Bahrain Masters and the Belgian Darts Open followed his Ally Pally heartbreak.

Before he can even think about facing off against Beckham Jr, Littler must focus on night 11 of the Premier League in Birmingham.
