But struggled to maintain his competitive edge in the following two seasons, ultimately losing his job in December 2018.
The Red Devils finished second during Mourinho’s second season in charge, but were a huge 19 points behind rivals Man City in first place.
And the club were struggling down in seventh place when he was sacked and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Portuguese gaffer has now given an insight into why he thinks he was unable to build a successful outfit while at United.
The three time Premier League winning manager pointed towards his struggles to “clean the house” of the bad eggs at the club and build with new players.
Speaking to Rio Ferdinand on FIVE, he said: “I always feel, everywhere, before you buy new furniture you need to clean the house.
“So I was more more about cleaning the house than buying new furniture and we didn’t clean it the way I wanted.

“I wanted to clean from the second season and we couldn’t for different reasons.”
The 61-year-old went on to add : “I cannot say that I was asking for A, B, C or D in the third season because it wasn’t right.
“I just knew, because it was my third season, I knew clearly what I didn’t want there.
“In terms of the individuals and in terms of the profiles I knew clearly what I didn’t want, but it didn’t happen.
“Sometimes in football you have to accept that. I accepted that and I tried my best.
“But I knew exactly the deep problems that we had there and in the third season the manifestation of those problems were more clear.”
Mourinho is now looking for a new job again after he was sacked from his role as manager of Roma last month.
He also had an unsuccessful spell back in the Prem with Tottenham before he took the job in Italy.
Rumours have suggested that Mourinho is learning German with one eye on taking over as Bayern Munich boss in the near future.
