IT may have been quiet on the racing front this week, but it was still exciting at Ditcheat.
I’ve been getting to know Caldwell Potter, the horse who cost 740,000 Euros at auction last month, and his funky patterns mean he certainly stands out in a crowd.
Not just because he’s a grey, either, but because he also has white markings up his knees. He’s certainly unique.
He has been taking it all in his stride as he gets into the rhythm of Ditcheat life and the price tag doesn’t make any difference to the pressure, either.
Horses come in all shapes and sizes but, whatever their value and whatever the cost, as riders we treat them all the same.
We’re all looking forward to seeing him at Aintree next month — and I know a lot of people will have their eyes on him.
There’s plenty to look forward to this weekend as well, starting with a couple of nice rides for Lucy Wadham at Newbury today.
First up is PRETENDING (2.10) who has no weight whatsoever in the handicap hurdle, and the deeper the race, the more she steps up to the plate.
She has a great attitude and is so willing that she always gives you a good go at hitting the bullseye.
All ground comes alike to her, so that shouldn’t be a problem, and she is such an unfussy mare. I’d be hopeful of a good spin.
Then I ride GAME ON FOR GLORY (4.25) in the handicap chase and let’s say she has her own way of getting from A to B!
It’s definitely different but we still managed to win at Ludlow last month. She’s big and bold and ploughs her way through.
But the engine is definitely there even if she doesn’t get very high, and she turned in at Ludlow with birch flying around in her tail! You have to keep her focused but she’s very capable.
Hopefully Game On will go up and over the fences, rather than trying to go through them! But she’s not silly and hopefully she’ll give me an opportunity to win.
Then it’s on to Ascot tomorrow, and I’m particularly looking forward to ARQOOB (5.05), who is in a hot race but is a horse I’ve always felt has a big one in him.
I also ride VENGEANCE (3.55) for William de Best-Turner, who looks to be ahead of his mark.
Until next week, stay safe and keep kicking.
