Boulter began the new year with a 6-2 6-1 win in 70 minutes over Australian Olivia Gadecki in Sydney.

Her fella, Aussie Alex de Minaur, won the next singles against Billy Harris 6-2 6-1 and was involved in a doubles rubber win.

Those results meant GB lost the tie 2-1 and all three teams finished on the same points.

But the mathematics of GB’s opening 2-1 success over Argentina meant they topped Group F because they had claimed the most SETS of the three — and the Aussies were out.

Boulter, 28, said: “I’ve been trying to avoid all the stats on this.

“But we were at dinner with Laura Robson last night and she told me I had to win in straight sets. I was feeling the pressure.”

Boulter and De Minour announced their engagement shortly before Christmas.

The pair took to Instagram to share the news as Boulter showed off her stunning diamond ring.
