IAN WRIGHT has slammed Gareth Southgate for leaving Jarrad Branthwaite out of England’s recent friendlies.

The Everton centre-back was called up to the squad for the first time over the recent international break.

However he was left on the bench against both Brazil and Belgium, with Southgate preferring the likes of John Stones and Harry Maguire.

But even when Stones hobbled off with injury against Belgium Southgate turned to Joe Gomez, while Ezri Konsa and Lewis Dunk also started despite the latter making a costly mistake against Brazil.

Wright could not understand why Branthwaite was not given a chance to impress – particularly as Southgate now has no other opportunities to cast an eye over the youngster before picking his squad for Euro 2024.

He took to X to vent his frustrations, tweeting: “How did Jarrad Branthwaite get zero minutes across the two friendlies?

“Doesn’t make sense. Perfect opportunity to have a look at him.”

Wright is often vocal about the England team and does not hold back when it comes to criticising certain Southgate decisions.

The pundit also questioned Southgate after he initially omitted Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo from his squad.

Mainoo was a late call-up and featured in both games, but Wright gave Southgate both barrels.

He said: “How’s Kobbie Mainoo not in that England squad?

“Come on man, come on, man was immense today.”
