Iconic English club with almost 125 years of history could play last ever game TOMORROW after being evicted from stadium

NUNEATON BOROUGH could play their last-ever game against Alvechurch on Saturday after being evicted from their stadium.

The non-league club were served an eviction notice from their stadium at the end of last month.

That forced Nuneaton to play a home match at Hinckley, while Stratford Town have agreed to host their clash with Alvechurch free of charge.

However the club have released a statement announcing the game could be their last.

It reads: “Boro have agreed to play our game against Alvechurch on Saturday at Stratford Town FC. Kick-off is at 3pm.

“We would like to place on record our huge thanks to Stratford Town owner Jed McCrory for letting us use the pitch free of charge – a magnificent gesture in our hour of need.

“We would also like to thank Alvechurch and the Southern League for their co-operation.

“We hope as many of the Boro faithful as possible can make the trip and get behind the boys.

“We are working extremely hard to rectify the current situation but this may sadly be the last time that Boro play.

“Thank you for your unbelievable support.”

Nuneaton have played at Liberty Way since 2007, moving to the ground 18 months after holding then-Premier League side Middlesbrough to a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup.

England boss Gareth Southgate handled in the area in the last minute with Gaez Murphy scoring the penalty to send the 6,000 fans at Manor Park home happy.

Manchester United legend George Best once played for the club in a friendly against Coventry and scored from the penalty spot, while they boast former Premier League striker Leroy Lita in their ranks.

The Southern League Premier Central side are in a dispute with stadium landlord Arden Tigress.

Nuneaton have admitted to being in rent arrears since before Covid but Stuart Elliott, who recently stepped down as club chairman, reportedly offered to pay the outstanding debt.

The club stated their lawyer also spoke to the company and made a formal offer to pay all the rent owed plus six months advance rent – but this has been rejected.

They also claim the eviction has cost the club £60,000 in lost revenue as they have not been able to play home games in their ground.

Nuneaton are set to play Coventry Sphinx in a Birmingham Senior Cup tie on Tuesday – the fixture has been reversed so will now be an away game.

Borough are seventh in the league, level on points with AFC Telford who occupy a play-off spot on goal difference.
